About PECC

Acknowledging the compelling need and the significant interrelatedness between population and the environment issues, SDPI has established a Population and Environment Communication Center (PECC) with the support of a grant received by The David and Lucile Packard Foundation. PECC program was officially launched on August 1st, 2001.

Objectives

PECC is committed to achieving sustained national capacity in population and environment communications and advocacy. The basic goal of PECC is to disseminate information and awareness on the inevitable nexus between population and environment and, together with the issues of development, how this nexus impacts the population at large and the decisions taken at the individual level. Media practitioners, academia including community leaders, government personnel and other civil society representatives are the main focus of PECC activitiesTop

PECC whereabouts

PECC is housed within SDPI, but operates at the national level by involving a number of stakeholders, both in the public and private sectors, in all the four provinces of the country. It endeavors to create awareness and build capacity for advocating the interrelatedness between population and environment-related issues. The goal of PECC is achieved by adopting a multi-pronged strategy comprising of inputs from the following four units at the SDPI: Research, Training; Population Information Unit Networking and Advocacy. In addition, PECC is striving to establish a ‘Media Lab’ to disseminate information through drama serials, theatre, and radio programs considering that this mode of communication has an enhanced impact in the rural areas.

Through these components, the following objectives are met:

To ensure that these objectives are met, training courses in various disciplines have been designed to cater to the needs of the people and to emphasize the correlation between population and the environment. In all, eight training courses are developed on topics like population and development; national population policies; linkages between population and environment, and the role of men, women and the youth in reproductive health, inter alia.
