Discriminatory laws against women

Whenever there is a coalition between religious parties and military in the country, women have been the worst affected party. Women have been suffering and bearing the brunt of all the discriminatory laws and fighting against such laws.

SDPI is an active member of various forums such as JAC and CORIN working towards the repeal of the Hudood Ordinance.

SDPI in collaboration with various civil society organizations and women rights activists established a Forum for Fighting Violence Against Women in April 2004.

Given the multi-layered spectrum of violence in our society, the forum doesnot focus on any one particular paradigm of feminism. Forum members who are all volunteers decided that physical acts of violence against women or threats to women’s lives would be addressed as a priority area. However, the causes behind structural violence would also be explored.

Four sub committees were constituted, having their own coordinators:

  • Press committee: responsible for writing articles on violence against women, in the Urdu as well as English newspapers and magazines
  • Radio committee: would try to find ways for accessing radio as a means for creating awareness about the issues involved in violence against women
  • Data collection committee: would collect data from newspapers on incidents of violence against women
  • Follow up committee: would follow up cases that were previously in the media but have now fizzled out of public attention.

Please contact Dr. Saba Gul Khattak (saba@sdpi.org) Executive Director of SDPI for more details.
