Education
Curriculum revision Pakistan’s public education system has an important role in determining how successful we shall be in achieving the goal of a progressive, moderate and democratic Pakistan. Since children are our future, the national curricula and textbooks, especially in Social Studies, English, Urdu and Civics, shape their identity and value system.
SDPI has prepared a report on curricula and textbooks in Pakistan's mainstream educational system. The report brings out the negative elements that have over the years become an increasing component of the school educational material.
- It shows how the mainstream school education system:
- Teaches a student to hate people of other nations and religions
- Incites students to violence, intolerance and war mongering
- Creates a false sense of identity that excludes all non-Muslims from
the mainstream
And how in the name of Pakistani nationhood:
- History is distorted and blatant lies are propagated in the name of historical truths
- War and the militancy is glorified
- Gender and social stereo types promoted
- Covers up the flaws in educational ideology
In this research project, a group of 30 researchers from all over the country, including curriculum experts, textbook authors and teachers took part. This group participated in two workshops that were held in Islamabad. The group identified negative material and besides recommending alternative material, also recommended formation of a new educational commission. The report was widely disseminated to relevant stakeholders.
