Demonstration against Kuri waste dump

To record their protest against the construction of a waste dump at Kuri, the residents of Union Council Kuri, Islamabad, alongwith SDPI will stage a demonstration in front of Islamabad on October 17, 2006. The demonstration will starts at 10 am from China Chowk, Islamabad and will end near the Supreme Court building.

CDA has given approval to construct a sanitary landfill site near village Kuri, which is about 4 km from Chak Shahzad, 7.3 km from the Diplomatic Enclave (SDPI premises) and hardly 10 km aerial distance from the President House, Supreme Court of Pakistan and Parliament House.

The population of Union Council Kuri is 13,398 (1998 census). UC Kuri comprises of four villages: Kuri, Malot, Rakh Bangla, and Rihara.

In the public hearing, held at the Convention Centre on August 19, 2006, stakeholders strongly protested against the project. DG PEPA and DG environment promised that they would review the plan. A special committee, comprising of representatives of all the stakeholders, was constituted to settle the issue. The CDA's unilateral decision caused displeasure and unrest among the locals when the contractor mobilized the construction materials and machinery on October 12, 2006 to start the project.

Due to the proposed project’s proximity to residential areas, thousands of people are expected to be affected besides its other disastrous environmental affects in the area.
