Revisiting Sixty Years of Freedom |
The year 2007 marks the 60th anniversary of the colonisers leaving South Asia and the birth of great nation states. It is in this context that SDPI facilitated the regional conference titled Revisiting Sixty Years of Freedom under the “Imagine a New South Asia (INSA)” campaign.
The conference was an attempt to reassess freedom and reset our priorities. People want freedom from hunger, poverty, want, fear, and freedom to live with dignity. This is premised on the axiom that every single individual on earth has both the potential and the right to live a decent life. This event gave us a chance to shun the tainted practice of hegemony and oppression in the name of religions, ethnicity, caste and culture. Also, this was an opportunity to strive for a democratic, decentralized political system.
The program was held from 11-12 August 2007 at Ambassador Hotel, Lahore. Besides local activists, researchers, academia and intellectuals from all over the country, delegates from other South Asian countries attended the event which was covered by all major newspapers and televison channels:
