Berberis vulgaris is a deciduous spiny shrub. Stem branched, 2 to 3 meterslong. Leaves obovate, sessile arranged spirally on stem. Leaves margin ciliated. In Northern Areas found in Nalter, Hunza, Nagar, Chilas, Puniyal, Ghupis.
Medicinal uses:
The berries of B. vulgaris are sour and astringent and contain malic and citric acids, can be used in febrile diseases and diarrheas. The root and inner bark are used as dyestuff.
Locally, the plant is used for the treatment of internal injuries. An ointment made from root powder is mix with oil and applied on broken bones. It is also used for fencing and hedges.
