| Many important medicinal plants grow wild in the mountains and planes all over the Northern Areas e.g. Aconitum species, Glycyrrhiza spp, Ferula spp, Angileca spp, Podophyllum spp, Cappris spp, Rheum spp, ephedra spp, Hyoscyamus spp, Mentha spp, Thymus spp, Juniperous spp, Paganum spp, Artimisia spp etc. Few of them are identified as endangered species under CITES. Day by day , the biomass of these species is declining mainly due to habitat loss, free and over grazing, increased human interventions and consumption, deforestation, land clearing for agricultural purposes and overexploitation by trans nomadic pastoralists migrating from down country. The local communities are using these herbs without proper management of their habitat. Over harvesting is common for the more valuable plant such as Kurth, Ephedra, Artimezia, Seabuckthorn, and Berberis species. Increasing awareness about the minimal or no side effects of medicinal plants is also a reason for over harvesting. At the same time, population upsurge is also responsible for increased use.
