World Governments Support Breakthrough Agreement on Mercury: 25th Session of the UNEP Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum and 10th Global Civil Society Forum

At the 25th Session of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment (GC/GMEF), the main emerging issues discussed under the main themes were globalization and environment; global crisis/national chaos; international environment governance; and, the UN reforms. Over 800 delegates from all over the world participated in this meeting. Other agenda items included consideration of reports on Global Environment Outlook and Chemicals Management, including mercury and waste management. ........more ......

A Missed Opportunity

To many in the scientific community, the threat of climate change can only be understated. The Kyoto Protocol was seen only as the first step in addressing the issue of climate change. The Marrakesh Accords laid the foundation of the global initiative and the Kyoto Protocol came out with concrete mechanisms for establishing mitigation actions. The protocol makes it binding for the signatory industrialized countries (the so-called ‘Annex-I’) to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 5.2 percent compared with 1990 levels.........more ......
