WTO and Environment
July 6

Dr Abid Qayyum Suleri, assistant executive director of SDPI, conducted the training. Eighteen participants, representing different government departments, ministries, national and international NGOs, international funding agencies and United Nations Organizations participated in the two-day training.

The workshop started with an introduction on World Trade Organization and environment. It also looked into Kyoto Protocol and other international environmental agreements, standards and non-tariff barriers for international trade, Agreement on Agriculture (Linkages of Trade, Environment and Livelihood), and the Dispute Settlement and some environmental disputes in WTO. It also touched the future scenario in the context of WTO and environment.

52nd Meeting of the Study Group on IT and Telecommunication
July 13

Forty-two participants, representing service providers, telecom law experts, academia and other stakeholders, attended the meeting. Being a think tank for policy recommendations, SDPI has taken a lead to organize such events twice a year in which public and citizens’ concerns are highlighted, and the recommendations are made to the concerned departments, ministries and organizations to formulate strategies and policies by focusing the interests of consumers and customers. Performance Appraisal or Enhancing Organizational Effectiveness
July 19

The lead trainer was Zahir Uddin Butt, as 19 participants, including five females from various leading organizations of the country, attended the workshop. The participants were able to describe common mistakes in the performance appraisal process, state importance of establishing clear expectations, and explain various methods of performance appraisal. They also learnt how to conduct appraisals that increase employee motivation and work performance, provide effective performance appraisals feedback to employees, and understand how to design employee development plan for improved job performance.

Report Writing Skills
August 02

Twenty participants attended the workshop. To write a report is a technical area, and there are very few persons who have the expertise to write various reports. There is an increasing demand to learn writing techniques; particularly development professionals have more interest to learn effective report writing. Malik Mushtaq Ahmed was the trainer for the three-day event. The participants were told about how to develop writing skills, along with drafting, revising, editing and finalizing the text.
The trainer also talked about thinking process involved in writing, besides the types and patterns, and style of paragraphs. The training discussed various types of reports, and the components of a technical.
There was an extensive session on grammar, which included removing fat, using proper words, achieving consistency, sentence combining, proofreading, and punctuation.

Gender Dimensions of Economic Globalization
August 10

It was a specialized workshop in which the gender perspective was considered with reference to globalization. Women are the most vulnerable communities in the whole process of globalization, i.e. from economic perspective. Sixteen participants, including nine women, representing public, private and development sector organizations, attended the workshop. Participants were awarded certificates on the completion of the workshop.

Monitoring and Evaluation of Projects
August 16

Twenty-two participants representing the public and development sector organizations from all over Balochistan attended the workshop. The participants were able to understand the principles and procedures for effective project monitoring and evaluation, formulate and use the logical framework analysis to monitor and evaluate projects, and use work breakdown structures and MS Project to monitor project efficiency. They were also explained about improving their ability to gather, manage, and communicate project information, and learn methods to evaluate project effectiveness and impact.
