Project: Biofuels (Ethanol) Prospects in Pakistan

Activity: National Workshop on Bio-fuels Production, Trade and Sustainable Development

Top of this page Background

Pakistan is burdened with high and increasing oil import costs.  Fuel combustion in the transport, energy, industry and agricultural sectors contributes to global warming. It also endangers the health of our citizens -- especially poor communities. There is, therefore, a critical need to explore renewable energy options, which are both cost effective and environmentally friendly.  In this context, biofuels present promising possibilities.

SDPI in collaboration with the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is organizing a National Workshop on Bio-fuels Production, Trade and Sustainable Development, to be held in Islamabad, Pakistan on October 25, 2007.

The workshop will explore key sustainable development issues associated with production and trade in bio-fuels (ethanol) in Pakistan, and identify policy options to promote sustainable bio-fuels production and trade while minimizing risks. A global overview of biofuels in the context of sustainable development will be provided. SDPI will present its inception report on ethanol production and trade, focusing on the “sustainable development” perspective. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources will assess the scope and potential of renewable energy sources in Pakistan. The Ministry of Commerce will address the policy, institutional, and fiscal constraints facing domestic bio-fuels production and trade and the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock will elaborate on the agricultural policy and regulation of bio-ethanol feedstock.  Finally, Pakistan Sugar Mills Association will present their perspective on domestic policies pertaining to feedstock production and processing.
