Health
SDPI’s program on health is multi-dimensional in nature focusing not only on empirical and theoretical research but providing policy advice to the government on issues of concern and capacity building of key personnel in areas of health economics, health policy, health services reforms, and economic evaluation of health care programs.
Theoretical and Empirical Research
Research has been carried out and published in national and international journals on issues relating to
- Aspects of child health: Determinants of mortality, survival, and health status measurement
- Health care financing: Alternative resources mobilization strategies for Pakistan’s health care
- Health policy reforms: For improving health outcome of children and mothers
- Gender responsive budget appraisal for health
- Population Report of Pakistan
- Budget transparency: Process, analysis and outreach
- Use of ICT in promoting access to health services in remote areas of Pakistan
Policy Advice
The main objective of policy advice is to propose, update, and strengthen decision- making. Since there is lack of capacity to generate evidence in Pakistan, the task of advice is difficult. However, to address evidence and policy disconnect, specific advice is provided in areas of:
- Health care financing, and determinants of child health
- Resource mobilization for Pakistan’s health care
- Determinants of health
Capacity building
A series of trainings have been conducted for the personnel of the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Health, Planning Commission of Pakistan, Health Services Academy, NGOs and academia on topics relating to:
- Economic evaluation of health care programs
- Health Economics
- Health care Finance and delivery
- Gender sensitive budget analysis
Advocacy
Strengthening the role of the state as a principal steward of the health system in Pakistan and subsidiary role of the private sector in promoting health and health care. This is to be achieved by improved public-private partnership for achieving objectives of better health.
