Introduction
Natural resource management (NRM) spans many sectors. Water, which is vital for survival, comes way ahead of other natural resources. Sustaining the supply and quality of water is critical to human health, agriculture, industry and energy. Unfortunately, we are witnessing mismanagement of water. What must be clearly understood is that the best approach to improving water resource management is through involvement of stakeholders in planning and decision-making process.
Integrated water resource management (IWRM) is a systematic process for sustainable development, allocation and monitoring of water resource use in the context of social, economic and environmental objectives. It contrasts with the prevailing sectoral approach where responsibility for drinking water rests with one agency, for irrigation with another and for environment with yet another. Lack of cross-sectoral linkages leads to uncoordinated water resource development and management, leading to conflict, waste and unsustainable systems.
The workshop will help participants develop an in-depth understanding of planning integrated water resource management.
Who should attend
The workshop is designed to benefit senior and middle level managers responsible for planning and management of water resources. Ministries of water and power, food and agriculture, environment and other departments like WAPDA, irrigation, planning and development will find the training helpful. The workshop will be beneficial for organizations working for conservation of natural resources like IUCN, WWF and other NGOs.
Objectives
The objective of the workshop is capacity building for natural resource management to meet the challenges of sustainable development by integrating socio-economic aspect of water resources development and management. The training workshop will enable participants to enhance their capacity for integrated multisectoral and multidimensional issues in developing water resource management plans.
