Training Workshop on WTO and Environment (6-7 July 2005)
Venue: The training workshop will be held at SDPI or in a local hotel in Islamabad.
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (daily)

Top of this page Introduction
For the last ten years, the environmentalists and the trade policy community have engaged in an intense debate over the environmental consequences of liberalized trade. It has been further intensified by the creation of the World Trade Organization and proposals for future rounds of trade negotiations. Free traders think that the argument about environmental protection by some economic stakeholders will be used as an excuse to gain protection for themselves against competition from abroad. Environmentalists feel that free trade would mean less importance to environmental goals and excessive priority to market-measured GDP. The situation becomes complicated for less developed countries and developing countries, including Pakistan, which perceive environmental issues as non-trade tariff barriers for their exports. The importance of establishing coherent relationships between the trade obligations set out in various bilateral/multilateral trade agreements and environmental policies of countries is increasingly being recognized. It is in this context, the training workshop will explore various dimensions of interrelationship between “WTO and Environment”.
