Introduction
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a planning and management tool, which ensures integration of environmental and socio-economic concerns in development planning by identifying environmental and socio-economic impacts of proposed development projects and remedial or mitigation measures. Integration of environment into development planning has been recognized as one of the key instruments for implementing the National Environment Policy 2005. The Pakistan Environmental Protection Act, 1997 also makes EIA mandatory for all projects that are likely to have any of the above impacts. EIA has been included as Part-D in PC-I performa of the Planning Commission, Government of Pakistan. All international financing institutions like the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, European Union, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) etc. ask for environmental assessment before making any investment or grant. The civil society organizations are actively advocating for conducting EIA of all development projects.
Importance of EIA study
EIA aims to assess environmental impact at an early stage of project planning, design and development and build into the project, alternative ways and means to mitigate the adverse effects.
