Introduction
The International Chamber of Commerce defines environmental audit as “systematic examination of the interactions between any business operation and its surroundings”. Mounting public concern over the quality of the environment and stricter environmental legislations have led to a demand for reliable environmental information on industries and other enterprises. Environmental auditing is an important tool for assessing enterprises for potential environmental risks they may cause, their environmental liabilities, and their degree of compliance with environmental standards and legislation. Environmental audits help in reducing environmental and public health risks, and assist in improving environmental management systems. By using Environmental Audit tool, the environmental performance of a company and its units can be assessed, weak points can be identified and subsequently the required mitigating measures can be determined.
