Introduction
Managing a project is both an art and science. It involves a balanced combination of critical skills and mastery of the principles and techniques of management. A major part of time and cost over-runs is attributed to delays in project implementation. Good project management ensures effective implementation and timely completion of projects. It enables managers to make optimal use of human and material resources. Current project management techniques require a departure from traditional approach as it involves improved methodology on project selection, planning, implementation, controlling, evaluation and termination.This workshop is designed to help managers develop their skills in project management. It provides participants a good mix of best practices in project management and the opportunity to apply these techniques to their own projects.
Who should attend?
The training workshop is designed for managers and supervisors who are (or who will be) managing projects. The training will be useful for participants from industry, social sector and development organizations. academia, international funding agencies. NGOs, and public organizations.
Objectives
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Improve their skills in planning, managing and monitoring projects
- Improve their skills in recruiting
- Organizing and managing project teams
- Use the Ten-Step Management Process to manage their projects
Methodology
Initially participants will learn the basic principles of project management, the Ten-Step Project Management process, and MS Project. In small teams they will design a project of their choice on MS Project. They will learn the methods of managing quality projects through presentations and discussions. To apply the principles, teams would prepare and present a project. Participants would review a case study and apply the principles of project management learnt during the workshop.
Medium
of instructions
English will be the medium of instruction for this workshop. However, an effort will be made to conduct the workshop using a mixture of English and Urdu.

Resource
person Mr. Rafiq Jaffer works as a research, training and management consultant in human resource development and is currently the Director, Institute of Social Sciences, Lahore. He holds a Masters degree in Psychology. He has taught Psychology and Applied Psychology at the University of the Punjab. He has also worked as Education Programme Officer with the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), Karachi, and as Professor of Education and Head of In-service Division at the Ali Institute of Education (AIE), Lahore. He has written four books and over 200 research and training reports, papers and articles in English and Urdu which have been published nationally and internationally. Mr. Jaffer has conducted training workshops for the government, corporate and NGO sectors in Pakistan, Tajikistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa and Vietnam. He has planned and implemented numerous projects and has been extensively involved in monitoring and evaluation and writing reports.

Cancellation/postponement
SDPI reserves the right to cancel or postpone the workshop if circumstances require. In such an event, SDPI will ensure that registered participants are informed as soon as possible. SDPI will also refund registration fees according to our refund procedures.
Award
of certificates
- Trainees successfully completing 85 percent of the instructional sessions will be awarded completion certificates.
- Trainees who for genuine reasons are unable of complete 85 percent attendance but attend 60 to 84 percent instructional sessions will be given partial attendance certificates.
- Trainees attending less than 60 percent of instructional sessions will be given letters specifying the sessions that they attended.
