Introduction
Technical (scientific, engineering, research) reports have special requirements. If not done well, they fail to achieve the objective for which they are written. Unfortunately, technical writing for many professionals remain a weak area. It is not systematically taught in academic institutions. Individuals learn this skills through self or peer teaching by hit and trial methods which may take many years. An inadequate expertise in this skill may mean lost opportunities and difficulties in career development. This training workshop is designed to enable the participants to improve their knowledge and acquire skills in technical writing.
Objectives
After completion of the workshop, participants will be expected to:
- Understand the aims and elements of technical writing
- Understand the essentials and components of a technical and research report
- Improve their knowledge of drafting, editing, documentation and presentation of technical reports.
- Generate logical arguments through critical and creative thinking
- Analyse data using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS)
Methodology
SDPI follows participatory and experiential training approach for skill development. The session plans, besides lectures, are developed around experience-sharing, group work, practices and presentations. Based on the feedback on earlier training programmes, sessions have been planned to optimise satisfaction of the participants and achieve objectives of the workshop. Efforts are made to tailor such trainings according to expectations of the registered participants. The workshop is designed to directly involve participants, individually as well as in groups, in writing effective reports, and they will have an opportunity to discuss ideas and present solutions.

Malik Mushtaq Ahmed holds a Master degree from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. An accomplished and widely acknowledged professional technical writer, he has over 30 years of experience in writing various kinds of reports, technical articles, books and brochures. He has worked in Pakistan Agricultural Research Council as publications and information professional. During this period he trained a large number of persons in report writing skills. He participated in several expert consultations relevant to writing and information, both at national and international levels. He has served as liaison officer in Pakistan for information services, provided by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. He has represented Pakistan for three years as member of the governing board of SAARC information centre established at Dhaka, Bangladesh. Since his retirement, he is working as a free-lance trainer and has delivered a number of training courses for UN sponsored project staff and managers working in leading NGOs.

English will be the medium of instruction for this workshop. However, an effort will be made to conduct the workshop using both English and Urdu.

Completed Registration forms should reach the Program Support Officer via fax or mail latest by 23 February 2007. The institute will confirm registration upon receipt of fee by a return fax. Please use a separate registration form for each nominee. Please note that seats are limited and applicants will be registered on a first come, first served basis. Registration will close if all the seats are taken up before the last date.

Cancellation/postponement
SDPI reserves the right to cancel or postpone
the workshop if circumstances require. In such an event, SDPI will ensure
that registered participants are informed as soon as possible. SDPI will
also refund registration fees according to our refund procedures.
Award
of certificates
- Trainees successfully completing 85 percent of the instructional sessions will be awarded completion certificates.
- Trainees who for genuine reasons are unable of complete 85 percent attendance but attend 60 to 84 percent instructional sessions will be given partial attendance certificates.
- Trainees attending less than 60 percent of instructional sessions will be given letters specifying the sessions that they attended.
